When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Cleveland area, it was a rude awakening for the restaurant industry. Even though some businesses have found it difficult to alter their approaches, one company realized it was time for a root reawakening.

In the beginning, we were drawn to Rood Food and Pie, which is located at 17001 Madison Avenue in Lakewood, for its menu of gourmet sliders and pies that encouraged communal dining. Of course, the restaurant decided to put that approach on hold early in 2020 in order to introduce a new brunch and lunch menu. The return of Rood to the local dinner scene in December, after a nine-month hiatus, brought with it a new menu of food and pies. This week, PressureLife traveled to Rood in order to see if the new menu is as promising as Ruthsatz’s original vision.

To be honest, I was a little skeptical. Is this something I always say? Since Rood Food + Pie first opened its doors in 2018, I’ve had a burning desire to fall in love with it. They are an Instagram-dream influencer’s backdrop, thanks to their adorable AF pink neon lights, living plant walls, RV camper bar, and marquis sign decor, among other things. The restaurant is also perfectly situated in one of the few small pockets of Madison Avenue that isn’t suffocated by a slew of excellent dining options, which has certainly attracted the attention of residents in the surrounding neighborhood.

Once during the early days of their slider-based menu and again during the height of the quarantine when they switched to a breakfast-only format, I’ve had positive experiences with the restaurant. Neither of them really worked for me, but I’m hoping the third time will be the charm. Everything on the newly revamped menu, which I would characterize as a modern take on southern soul food, is a complete and total success.

I would love to return and try a number of the items we didn’t order, but their perfectly executed, not-too-greasy fried chicken sandwich, the Rood Chick, and the dry-rubbed brisket sandwich were both instant favorites on the spot. The drunken chicken and rice, which I would describe as a New Orleans-style Chipotle bowl, was rich and flavorful, and it came with a cajun smoked cheddar biscuit that would make Red Lobster look like a jerk if it were served in their establishment. I didn’t care for the eggnog cream pie at all, but I spent the next three or four days savoring bites of the whiskey chocolate pie (and I’ll definitely be back for the highly acclaimed salt and honey pie). We were very pleased to see the large number of takeout orders that were picked up from there, and we hope that anyone who was not initially impressed with the food will give them another chance.

When it comes to takeout, I’ve been known to indulge in a little rood here and there. However, some foods hold up better than others. Simply put, Rood is a good travel companion. After an exciting journey from Lakewood to my house—along with an impromptu photoshoot requested by Hannah—the food held up well, with the exception of one bun that became stuck to a container during the journey.

What’s more, everything was absolutely delectable. There wasn’t a single dish among the selections we ordered that we wouldn’t consider ordering again on a future visit. Takeout versions of the knife and fork chicken sammy were deconstructed, but each component stood up to scrutiny on its own (and tasted darn good combined as well). To be completely honest, the Cajun smoked cheddar biscuits were probably my favorite part of the meal. Delightfully crispy on the outside and oh so soft on the inside, the delightful pillows of flavor were a hit with everyone. Just getting my hands on a plate of these biscuity devils would be enough to tempt me back. The dry-rubbed brisket and curry bun were every bit as good as I remembered them from my previous visit. The andouille in cream sauce, on the other hand, turned out to be surprisingly light, providing a welcome change of pace from the previous dishes of biscuits, bacon, beef, and fried chicken.

Of course, no rooster trip is complete without a slice of homemade pie. Despite the fact that I am a noted fan of salt and honey, we decided to try the cognac pumpkin and apple pear bourbon walnut pies instead. A good apple pie is always a favorite of mine, but the pumpkin pie was my favorite out of the two that I tried. The cognac provided a nice warm burn to go along with the clove and ginger flavors that spiced up this seasonal delight. The chili nachos were fine, but I wouldn’t order them again if the opportunity presented itself. Overall, Brian and his team at Rood continue to be a source of inspiration. Another transformation is something I can’t wait for because they are constantly changing the game.

The smoked and flavorful brisket was the highlight of the meal. It was probably the slaw that was my favorite part of the entire evening. It was mayonnaise-based, but not overly mayonnaise-y; it was tangy and sweet, with a hint of what appeared to be dill. It was a delicious side dish that went well with both the brisket and the Rood chick, or you could just eat it on its own. While we’re on the subject, get that Rood chick. Get it a second time. In a single night. The drunken chicken and rice were similar to me in that they were dense and inebriated. The shredded chicken and cajun spices, which are soaked up by perfectly cooked rice, make this dish the ultimate comfort food. It’s really that simple.
